ASIAN TALES is a new initiative within the Musical Theatre course.
It is designed to create exciting, innovative and challenging new works in musical theatre, with local and regional subjects and themes.
In ASIAN TALES the level 2 Musical Theatre students have chosen a number of local and regional stories that they have then adapted for dramatic presentation, with the assistance of Iain Sinclair (Director), Ben Kiley (Musical Director) and Amanda Colliver (Vocal Coach/Composer).
That story? It's a Myth! The second year performance students share ASIAN TALES ranging from the deeply personal and the historical right through to the Mythical. This dynamic exercise in ensemble storytelling will address the question:
When a story becomes a Myth does does it carry less truth ... or does it carry more?
Told in a range of theatrical styles and carried by a blend of original, modern and traditional music, Asian Tales will grab hold of the ancient tiger's tail and hold on for dear life as it pulls you deeper and deeper into the heart of modern Asia.
It's the night before Meg Bacon's wedding. She's waited thirty-three years for this and she knows she's going to love every moment. She's gathered her mum and her bridesmaids together for one last night of girlie fun.
While the bride prepares for the biggest day of her life and her mum fusses over ribbons and shoes, Meg's bridesmaids, Lucy and Angela, stumble upon some information that has the potential to shatter Meg's dream. Should they tell or not tell? In the hysterical chaos that follows, Lucy and Angela discover that sometimes there is no right answer when it comes to doing what's best for your friend.
First performed at Melbourne's Playbox Theatre in 1999, Elizabeth Coleman's now-classic situation comedy is a hilarious look at how it can all go wrong in those final moments before ‘the most important day in a woman's life.’
In true Australian style Secret Bridesmaids' Business is a funny play about serious issues like truth, loyalty, denial, sex, love, the meaning of marriage, female friendship and the plight of modern woman when your biological clock is ticking overtime!
Never far from reality, Coleman's play exposes the insanity that can erupt as the wedding juggernaut threatens to swerve out of control. Marriage may be a wonderful thing, but after a night like this, well, could it really be worth it?
